Ex-England boss Gareth Southgate has publicly announced that he will not be returning to coaching for at least a year. The 54-year-old stepped down from his role following a defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 finals. Speculation has been rife that Southgate might replace struggling Dutch coach Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, particularly given his strong relationship with United’s recent appointment, sporting director Dan Ashworth. In the capacity of Football Association technical director in 2016, Ashworth was part of the team that picked Southgate for the England position.
Despite this, Southgate has dismissed rumours of an immediate return to a managerial role. “For sure, I will not be coaching next year. I am certain of that,” he disclosed to the European Club Association general assembly in Athens, in remarks captured by the BBC. Southgate emphasised the importance of allowing time for careful decision-making and recovery after stepping away from high-pressure roles, adding, “I’m happy with my life currently, so there’s no haste. I am lucky to have various options to choose from.”
