Sorcha Eastwood Wins Lagan Valley Seat

For the first time in history, Sorcha Eastwood, representing the Alliance party, has taken the Lagan Valley seat. A feat previously held by Jeffrey Donaldson, former leader of the DUP, for 27 years. Ms Eastwood’s win was significant as she is the first woman and non-unionist to secure that position.

In a tightly contested race against Jonathan Buckley, the DUP candidate, Ms Eastwood emerged victorious with a margin of almost 3,000 votes. She received a total of 18,618 votes, while Mr Buckley gained 15,659 votes.

In a touching moment before the official declaration at the Craigavon count centre at approximately 3.40am, she confirmed her victory over a call to her husband, Dale, who is currently battling a rare form of blood cancer.

During her victorious announcement, Ms Eastwood described the event as the dawning of a new era in Lagan Valley. She showed her intent for it to be a mutual journey, declaring it a chapter that everyone would pen together. She expressed her elation, proclaiming that change is achievable.

She stated that the night was not only a triumph for her and her party, but for the entire people of Lagan Valley. “Being born and raised in Lagan Valley, this victory has always been close to my heart, and I am overjoyed,” she said in celebration.

This victory followed Jeffrey Donaldson’s appearance in Newry Magistrate’s Court the previous day. The court deemed there was enough evidence for him to face trial over allegations of historical sexual offences. Mr Donaldson rejects these charges.

Despite his loss, Mr Buckley acknowledged the division in unionism but remained optimistic about the DUP’s future, assuring a comeback in the Lagan Valley. He highlighted the need to address their internal conflicts and refocus on upholding unionism to better Northern Ireland.

Robbie Butler from the Ulster Unionist Party chose not to join the podium and exited the count centre after seemingly accepting his defeat privately. He had secured 11,157 votes in this election.
