“Slovenia Holds Denmark After Eriksen’s Goal”

In the Group C Euro 2024 match, Denmark and Slovenia ended in a stalemate, concluding the match with a 1-1 score. Notably, Christian Eriksen scored a goal on his reappearance in the European Championship, nearly three years post his cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match versus Finland. Eriksen, who rejoined professional football eight months after his medical incident, gave Denmark an early 17th-minute lead in Stuttgart. Denmark carried hopes of winning the match until Erik Janza’s 77th-minute diversion-assisted goal.

Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko was unlucky to hit the post, perhaps depriving his team of the potential victory. Before Denmark’s Eriksen netted the first goal, Sesko, RB Leipzig’s much-touted striker had a go at the goal that narrowly missed. Denmark’s quick throw-in seized the lead, thanks to Jonas Wind’s flick to Eriksen, whose calculated chest-control and shot found the back of the net.

The Slovenians were having a hard time making headway into the match. Eriksen, hoping to double the lead for Denmark, misfired a cross that Sesko inadvertently deflected against Jan Mlakar, his own teammate, with the ball sliding past the goalpost. An optimistic Slovenian team then almost made good from a pair of long throws, however, their penalty appeal didn’t pass the VAR scrutiny.

64 minutes in, goalkeeper Jan Oblak stood tall preventing Rasmus Højlund’s effort from a pass by Wind from extending Denmark’s lead. Slovenia largely steered the match afterward, though Adam Gnezda Cerin and Andraz Sporar missed their chances. Sesko made a remarkable 76th-minute strike from 25 yards out that hit the post but yielded a corner from which Slovenia equalised. Janza volleyed just from outside the penalty box, taking a significant deflected course past Denmark’s goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
