Mary Lou McDonald, leader of Sinn Féin, said that despite the party’s disappointing performance in the recent local and European polls, they will rally and recover. She acknowledged the lack of success the party faced, adding that it was a ‘blow’ to initially anticipate to be the incoming government, only to experience a significant drop in support.
She revealed that the party is currently conducting a review to identify the weak spots in their electoral strategy, especially in light of a potential general election later this year. Speaking at the annual Co Kildare Wolfe Tone commemoration, she noted that disappointments are indeed a part of political struggles which don’t always go as hoped.
The Sinn Féin leader emphasised the party’s strong foundation built on sacrifices, resilience and hope, and noted their tendency to perform best when confronted with adversity. She stated that the party’s ability to recover from setbacks is what shapes their future, adding with certainty that their journey is far from over.
She made a pitch to the public, offering them an alternative choice in the upcoming general election to the usual options of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. She underscored that Sinn Féin is the choice for serious change, promising to approach the election with determination, confidence and vigour.
She assured the public that their message has been heard both by the party and by herself, and pledged to make even greater efforts in creating the fair society that they deserve. She concluded optimistically, stating that the chance to advance their vision for a new Ireland is now.
