Should we consider implementing tenure restrictions for local council members?

Dear Sir,

Ex-Green Party councillor has called for the imposition of age and term limits in the selection of local government representatives. While I too want to see an increase in youth participation in politics, the choice of our representatives should remain solely in the hands of the electorate. I have fulfilled my duties on Dublin City Council with unwavering commitment and energy since 1993 and have been re-elected in each successive election. If one were to measure my council motions, submissions and queries against some of my younger counterparts, it would be clear I remain effective, even ahead. Certainly, it’s imperative to motivate unrepresented groups and individuals to participate in politics. Yet, us “veterans” still harbour much vitality and input. I am eager to explore new concepts pertaining to areas such as housing, waterways, local infrastructure, planning, and more. Additionally, urgent reform of local government, an issue of great national significance, remains a focus. Ultimately, the selection of representatives will be determined by the people’s vote at the polling stations, and I am truly appreciative of this democratic process.

Yours sincerely,
Councillor Dermot Lacey,
Labour Party,
Dublin 4.
