Senator Shane Cassells Exits Politics

Shane Cassells, a senator from Fianna Fáil, has announced his retirement from politics, stating that he believes he has offered all he can following 25 years of public service. The 46-year-old has been politically active as a councillor, a Senator, and a TD from Meath, beginning at the tender age of 21. He plans to remain in the Seanad until the forthcoming general election, which is required to take place by March 2025, but he does not intend to participate in the race.

Cassells commented on his departure, reminiscing about his term which included 16 years as a councillor and nine years in the Oireachtas as a TD and Senator, stating that although it had been an enjoyable journey and a privilege, he was now ready to exit public life.

Speculation was rife that Cassells would put himself forward as a candidate to reclaim the Meath West seat he first won in 2016, but lost in 2020. Another possible candidate for this week’s convention was Cllr Aisling Dempsey, daughter of Noel Dempsey, a former TD and minister. However, Cassells stressed that his decision to retire was made independently, not spurred by any external force or circumstances.

Tánaiste and party leader Micheál Martin expressed admiration and respect for Cassells’ contributions to his county and hometown of Navan, and stated his understanding of Cassells’ desire to embark on a new journey in life.

The party is yet to reveal whether it plans to adopt a single-candidate, or dual-candidate strategy in the three-seat Meath West convention, scheduled to take place on Thursday. Currently, the constituency is represented by TDs Johnny Brady of Sinn Féin, Peadar Tóibín from Aontú, and Damien English, member of Fine Gael.

The most recent boundary modifications have upheld the constituency’s three-seat structure. Certain areas of Westmeath, earlier part of the constituency, have been moved back to Longford-Westmeath.

Meanwhile, Cllr Aisling Dempsey, based in Trim, secured her re-election to the Meath County Council in the elections held in June.
