Scheme for Returning Deposits

Dear Editor,

The Deposit Return Scheme is recognised as a non-profit entity. However, the early data on returns indicates the potential for substantial profit generation. There seems to be a higher inflow from deposits than outflows from recycling refunds. One might question what will be the fate of these surplus funds? Will the company’s financial statements be open to inspection? It appears clear that more revenue will gather than what is required to run the scheme smoothly.

Yours sincerely,
Kathleen Kelleher,

Dear Editor,

I recently witnessed a set of children carting a significant amount of plastic bottles and cans to a major grocery store, evidently in the hope of earning additional pocket money. To their disappointment, all four machines were malfunctioning, leaving the children empty-handed for their hard work. Unfortunately, these incidents are not isolated and the machines are reported to malfunction regularly. Is this a reflection of another flawed public programme?

Yours sincerely,

Dear Editor,

I recall that during my time in Germany, around 2005, a deposit return scheme was operating efficiently and was considered a routine aspect of life. Considering this, the question arises; why is the situation so different in Ireland? No wonder we’re encountering difficulties in building a metro or completing a children’s hospital!

Yours sincerely,
Eithne O’Callaghan,
