The world of Samoan rugby is reeling following the alleged arrest of Mase Mahonri Schwalger, the head coach and ex-Scarlets hooker. Local reports suggest he has been charged with a range of severe offences, including alleged sexual involvement with a minor.
Schwalger, 46, was purportedly apprehended last week and is believed to be out on bail, scheduled to appear in court on the 4th of November. According to information from Samoa Global News, Schwalger was charged by the state police with an array of serious offences including sexual engagement without consent, attempted sexual violation, inappropriate sexual conduct with someone under 16, and ordinary assault.
Lakapi Samoa, Samoa’s rugby authority, has yet to comment on whether Schwalger will retain his position as head coach. In a statement released after the news of Schwalger’s arrest surfaced, they announced: “Lakapi Samoa has knowledge of grave accusations made against our Head Coach, Mase Mahonri Schwalger. We have reported this matter to the police, and we are assisting them in any way we can with their probe. We will refrain from further comment to respect the privacy and rights of all those implicated. While the investigation progresses, Lakapi Samoa continues to be devoted to upholding the utmost standards of behaviour, as well as a safe and respectful environment for everyone.”
Since occupying his current role, Schwalger has managed six tests, guiding his chosen team to a notable 33-25 victory over Italy in July followed by a win against Spain, 34-30. They failed to succeed against Fiji in the Pacific Nations Cup, losing 42-16 before securing a 43-17 victory against Tonga. They lost to Japan, coached by Eddie Jones, 49-27 in the semi-finals of the tournament but triumphed over the US by 18-13 to seize the third place.
During his playing career, Schwalger played for the Scarlets and Sale, and represented his native country from 2000 until he ended his player career in 2014.
