“Sam Bennett Anticipates Tour de France Return”

Sam Bennett, 2020’s victor of the green jersey, is set to make a comeback to the Tour de France after a hiatus of four years. The race commences this Saturday in Florence, Italy, and despite the initial two stages being less than likely to showcase the sprinters, Bennett is prepared to grab any golden opportunities post these stages.

“I’m thrilled about making a comeback to the Tour de France after a break of four years. It’s an amazing opportunity, and I’d like to show my gratitude to my team for this,” the 33-year-old expressed in a team announcement for Decathlon Ag2r La Mondiale on Monday. Bennett had to sit out the 2021 tour due to a knee problem, and in the subsequent two years, his team didn’t select him.

Bennett was given a significant contract by the Decathlon Ag2r La Mondiale team to be a joint leader for major races like the Tour, and he is resolved to reciprocate the faith they have shown in him. “Being a part of the Grande Boucle again with a French team feels extraordinary,” Bennett said. “Securing a win for this team in the world’s most prominent race would indeed be a distinct honour. I think I have ample time to settle into the race since the onset is somewhat hilly,” he explained.

“Every stage counts, though. The first chance arrives post the inaugural weekend, and I aspire to be prepped for it. There should be around eight intense sprints with several competitors. I’m excited about the forthcoming contest,” he added.

Bennett’s recent victory in the Four Days of Dunkirk race, where he bagged four stages and the overall, is a testament to his remarkable form. It was his debut general classification win, which is indicative of how he’s successfully adapted in his new stint under the guidance of the Irish coach, Stephen Barrett.
