“Ryan: All-Ireland Finals Should Replay”

Pat Ryan, the manager of the Cork GAA team, has suggested that the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) should reassess the utilisation of extra time to resolve tied All-Ireland finals. This suggestion arises following the recent surge in discussions over applying extra time to final round games of All-Ireland.

Ryan expressed his views at the team’s accommodation in Ballsbridge on a Monday morning, where he confessed that he believes there should always be an opportunity for a rematch in an All-Ireland final. This belief stems from both commercial and personal perspectives.

Ryan’s statement highlighted that finals should without delay progress to a rematch, rather than extending into extra time duration. He argued that proceeding directly into extra-time could devolve into a game of chance, as consequently, several players get injured, affecting both his team and the opposition. Specifically, Shane O’Donnell and Peter Duggan of the Clare team, and Rob Downey, Seamus Harnedy, and Niall O’Leary from his team were among those who sustained injuries. Hence, in Ryan’s opinion, a rematch would be a more equitable solution, while acknowledging they had prepared and strategised for the existing rulebook.

Despite the defeat during the 2024 Hurling finals event, Ryan has maintained a dignified attitude without blaming the outcome on refereeing decisions. He stated that just like Cork, Clare might also question some rulings. However, he stressed that it’s time to move forward without dwelling on the past or partial refereeing decisions. Concluding his statement, Ryan expressed his pride in his team for showing true sportsmanship during the match. He also graciously admitted that Clare’s victory was hard-earned and well-deserved.

The preliminary schedule for the forthcoming championship sees Cork heading to Ennis to compete against Clare in their initial Munster SHC match. Ryan expressed his wish, with a chuckle, for them to continue their celebrations well into February and March.

Following a short break, the plan involves reassessment and a shift in attention towards the club games that kick off in a fortnight. The task will be to scout for fresh talents that can intensify the competition.

Ryan made note of the exceptional performance of the under-20 team the previous year and indicated that the objective would be to recruit three or four new faces. He recognised the inevitable annual panel changes and stated the need to identify a few more individuals who can contribute significantly.
