Overnight missile and drone attacks from Russia interrupted power services in Ukraine’s northern territories of Sumy and Kharkiv on Monday, as per Ukrenergo, the national grid coordinator’s Facebook reports. In Sumy, a high-voltage power unit was impacted, while neighbouring Kharkiv experienced forced shutdowns of the emergency power system, as stated in the report.
The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed on Telegram that a dozen Shahed drones, out of a total of thirteen launched from the north during the night, were intercepted in the Sumy zone. Notably, Ukrainian author Tanja Maljartschuk has referred to the devastating events as a ‘mass grave’ of their national history, expressing frustration over unpunished crimes.
The attacks caused a brief interruption in the power supply to parts of the northeastern Sumy region, officials confirmed on Monday. However, the military administration of the region later communicated through the Telegram communication app that power has now been restored in the affected sections and parts of Sumy city.
The national air force declared that Russia had initiated 13 drone attacks aimed at Ukraine, with air defence systems neutralising 12 of these aerial weapons over the Sumy region. Reuters attempted to independently confirm these reports but could not immediately obtain any comments from Russia, which has continually attacked Ukraine’s eastern and southern areas with drones and missiles during the ongoing conflict.
