“Russell: ‘Rosie’s Coming if We Qualify'”

In a high-stakes Euro 2025 qualifier at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, manager Eileen Gleeson of the Republic of Ireland stayed composed despite her new forwards, Julie-Ann Russell and Leanne Kiernan, wasting numerous opportunities. Gleeson opted not to bring in Amber Barrett or resort to the time-worn technique of sending Louise Quinn upfront for a classic goal attempt.

She had faith in Denise O’Sullivan to successfully partner with Russell, scoring an unforgettable goal in the 67th minute, giving Ireland a 1-0 lead against France. Gleeson was effusive in her praise of Denise, lauding her as an exceptional leader and player centralised in midfield.

Gleeson also lauded Russell for her exceptional resilience and work ethic. Russell’s daughter Rosie, she claimed, would even accompany them to the Euros if they qualify. This testament to Russell’s determination has rapidly travelled across the sporting world.

The French side’s manager, Hervé Renard, made the critical error of changing all his starters following Friday’s 2-1 victory over Sweden. O’Sullivan, a native of Cork, passed this off with a shrug, saying it might be considered an insult, but she didn’t mind.

In a burst of goal-scoring, O’Sullivan’s shot was rapidly followed by Russell’s second in two games, echoing her performance against England at Carrow Road. Gleeson was ecstatic about this performance stating that the hardworking and resilient play of her team was pivotal and she couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.

Certainly, baby Rosie is also part of the adventure! Recently, she’s been a frequent visitor at the hotels where the Irish team stays. Acknowledging her goal, Russell said it was especially delightful to her, explaining that her spouse Kieran and Rosie, along with numerous family members were present to witness the match. She highlighted that her father hails from Albert Road, Cork and was rejoicing at the occasion. Russell didn’t neglect to mention that she also has family in Douglas, who were equally excited to be there.

Even though she had missed a couple of less complicated opportunities earlier in the game, her successful goal was a marvellous display of skill, accomplished by skilfully manoeuvring past Elisa De Almedia and placing a brilliant finish at the top corner. She pointed out her previous experience as a left-wing player came in handy, as she deflected the ball into the top corner.

Russell also commended the hosts, Cork, for pulling such a significant crowd on a weekday evening, a gesture she considers as a positive sign for the team’s momentum. Following their 3-1 victory, Ireland is now ready for Friday’s first-round play-off draw where they will face a third-tier team from the Nations League. This win places Gleeson’s team in a favourable position even as they anticipate a more challenging second-round encounter.

Expressing her emotions after the win, Russell, a part-time player with Galway United said it was overwhelmingly touching. She said she felt elated to get the call from Eileen Gleeson to play again, especially following the birth of her daughter Rosie a few weeks prior. She expressed a need for a few days to comprehend the magnitude of this dream-like experience.

She revealed that she’s to resume her work at Microsoft on Thursday before getting back on track with Galway for their semi-final against Wexford. In line with her duties at Galway, she’s scheduled to attend Thursday’s training session. She hopes to bring Rosie to the Euros in the event they qualify, as the baby is now considered a part of the team camp.
