‘Rugby Club Expels Convicted Rape Player’

Mullingar Rugby Club has confirmed the expulsion of its 26-year-old member, Jonathan Moran, following the revelation this week that he is pending sentencing for rape and severe sexual misconduct. The events unfolded back in July 2019.

Last April, Moran was found guilty, however, his identity was only disclosed this week during a sentencing hearing after the victim, Bláthnaid Raleigh, surrendered her right to remain anonymous. Reports indicate that Moran had assaulted Miss Raleigh using a bottle, which led to her undergoing months of therapy in a specialist unit for sexual assault.

John Moran, a highly esteemed member of the club, had clocked more than ten years of play. He had notched up his 100th appearance for the senior first team in January. Nevertheless, upon learning about his conviction and the imminent sentence last Monday, he was promptly expelled.

Senior representatives orchestrated an urgent general committee assembly on Wednesday night, and the club severed ties with Moran.

The club’s general committee shared a statement stating, “The Mullingar Rugby Football Club was profoundly disturbed and disheartened to learn about the atrocious criminal act committed by ex-member Jonathan Moran. We unequivocally denounce and are horrified by this act.”

“Mullingar Rugby Football Club prides itself on nurturing a welcoming and safe space for all members. We are steadfast in nurturing a respectful, integrity-driven environment with zero tolerance towards any form of maltreatment. We remain committed to promoting the principles of sportsmanship, honour, and respect for everyone.”

The General Committee of Mullingar Rugby Football Club endorsed the statement.
