Rosslare Arrests: People Smuggling Probe

An investigation into human trafficking has been initiated by the Gardaí following the discovery of two men concealed in a compact commercial vehicle aboard a ferry at Rosslare port. Detainees, both said to be in their 30s, included the vehicle’s driver and a passenger.

The ship’s crew found the men during the journey and prior to the ferry’s arrival at Rosslare Europort on Friday, the gardaí in the Wicklow and Wexford division were notified. Thankfully, both individuals were in good health and received any state aids needed.

The investigating team comprises Gardaí from the immigration unit at Rosslare Port, backed by the serious crime hub, along with Wexford and Wicklow Garda divisions, who are examining all aspects of the incident. The investigation is expected to involve collaboration with international authorities.

The van’s driver and passenger were apprehended for a supposed violation under the Criminal Justice (Smuggling of Persons) Act, 2021. The two men were held at a Garda station within the Wexford/Wicklow Garda division, in accordance with section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Both men have since been released without any charge, whilst investigations continue and a file is prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
