Rory McIlroy’s Awards of Solace

Dear Sir,

Tomás Finn’s ironic enjoyment of the exaggerated responses to Rory McIlroy’s recent ‘conquered disappointment’ his emphasis on the financial compensation of more than a million euros from a near miss, somewhat overlooks the essence of the matter.

Rory McIlroy, in his last professional stage, concerns himself more with his legacy, given he has amassed a fortune beyond his lifetime’s need for spending. It’s important to note that the disappointment and melodrama arise from his consistent and frustrating near-misses at further major championships, notably this year’s US Open, as well as notable tournaments like the BMW PGA Championship and the Irish Open. These misses provide a certain agony when considering his place among the game’s legends. Wealth can hardly compensate for achieving legendary status.

Best regards,
JOHN NAUGHTON,
Rebus review: Edinburgh’s vibrancy jumps out of the screen in this character-focused rather than suspense-driven thriller.
‘Reneé Rapp, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan – an eminent surge of queer artists currently exists, which is most welcome.’
A Cold Eye by Carlo Gébler: A diary as memoir that is illustrative and gripping.
Opinion: There’s a need to voice dissatisfaction more often. After an irresponsible bus driver, I was left with an €81 taxi fare from Waterford to Kilkenny.
