Now thanks to a new generations of scholars which have done groundbreaking work on the use of colour in ancient times, we know for sure that the famous Ara pacis in Rome was originally painted in bright colours.
In fact last week we had the unique opportunity to see the Ara pacis in what might plausibly be the original colours.
By using digital technology, the experts have succeeded in bringing the monument back to life and to its old splendour.
For the joy of Tourists and Romans alike, the experiment will be repeated during the coming Christmas Season.
