Brendan Rodgers, the manager of Celtic, has refuted claims by Philippe Clement, his counterpart at Rangers, that he disrespected the latter ahead of the upcoming Scottish Premiership match, calling them “baseless”. Clement took issue with Rodgers’ casual suggestion that Celtic would enjoy “little amusement” in the impending competition, considered by many to be the championship deciding match. Celtic is currently leading Rangers by a three-point difference with an identical count of premiership matches yet to be played.
Rodgers defended his remark saying it was taken out of context and that those who attended his press conference would understand the sense in which it was stated. He stressed that he had always regarded such matches as extreme and competitive; one of the renowned football games internationally. He cherished these matches, as one of the reasons he continued to serve as Celtic’s manager, especially against Rangers.
Rodgers denied being discrediting to any manager or team, and vehemntly refuted the claims of disrespect. He presented himself as a calmer and more assured figure when compared to Clement, whose team’s performance has notably declined after squandering points against Ross County and Dundee, putting Celtic back in the driving seat. Rodgers attributes Celtic’s current stability, only one loss registered since mid-December, to the resurgence of key players following injury, noting that there is a wealth of experience within the Celtic squad that serves to enhance the club’s approach.
“They comprehend the necessary commitment. Consider Callum McGregor and James Forrest, along with other seasoned players. Also on staff, we have John Kennedy, the assistant manager, and Stevie Woods, the goalkeeping coach. Their presence adds to the team’s confidence and understanding of success. This understanding brings about a tranquillity, enabling the players to focus on performance, rather than external distractions.
Despite the progress, we have a significant task ahead, beginning tomorrow. We’re on the right track if we can achieve an effective performance and favourable outcome, yet there is still much to accomplish. The players should be appreciated for handling criticism and remaining resolute throughout the season. They have not wavered but believed in the process.”
Clement underlined the unexpected progress his team made. Once seven points behind Celtic when he replaced Michael Beale in October, they closed that gap, defying expectations. Despite their victory in the League Cup, any failure to capture the main prize under Ranger’s hold will prove bitter for supporters if Rodgers successfully defends Celtic.
Rodgers went on to comment that “Perfection isn’t always attainable on the pitch, however, an endeavour to improve every day in each game can guide you towards your goals,” as reported by The Guardian.
