Chancellor Rishi Sunak today announced in the Commons that energy regulator Ofgem has announced a £693 uprise to the energy bills price cap. It takes the new point to £1,971. It is a height of 54 per cent or almost £700 as the price cap increases.
Mr Sunak also mentioned backing to relieve the stress on millions of households confronting skyrocketing energy bills. He said the government will provide people in council tax bands A to D a £150 council tax reimbursement in April.
It signifies 80% of council taxpayers in England get the redemption. So, there will also be £150m for local powers in England to support lower-income households.
On Thursday morning, Minister James Cleverly stated that some people were still “going to stumble” with bills.
Jonathan Brearley, Ofgem chief executive, declared:
“We know this rise will be extremely troubling for many people. The energy market has encountered a massive challenge due to the phenomenal boost in global gas prices, a once in a 30-year event.”
Mr Brearley also explained as an energy regulator is to guarantee that energy companies can only set a fair price based on the actual cost of providing electricity and gas.
Deborah Carlsson, a 61 years old woman who lives in Grove Hill, Middlesbrough said she goes to bed to pound the cold because of her rocketing heating bills. It costs less to control the electric blankets on the beds than to fire up the gas central heating.
