“Review: Tacos Lupillo’s Worth Queuing Mexican Food”

Nestled beside Cleary’s pub on Sarsfield Road, Kilmainham, Dublin 10, you’ll find Tacos Lupillo. This small Mexican food joint has been wowing locals since it opened in December of the previous year, with its enticing menu that draws lines around the block. Patrons are encouraged to get creative with their orders, picking their preferred base of tacos, burritos, tortas or volcanes and filling it with their choice of succulent meats like beef, chicken or al pastor. There are also several tables outside, as well as the option of dining inside Cleary’s pub with the purchase of a beverage. For those preferring the comforts of home, Deliveroo is also an option.

The co-owners, a Mexican couple, Jose Guadalupe Zamudio (Lupillo) and his wife, together with their teenage children man the place, with Lupillo taking charge of the open kitchen. Originating from Celaya in the state of Guanajuato, Lupillo provides an authentic Mexican dining experience.

On our recent midweek visit, we were able to sample their Tacos al pastor, alambre chicken, vegetarian volcanes, beans and pico de gallo. Although the menu can seem a bit complicated for first-timers, the friendly staff was quick to explain when we reached the front of the line. Our takeaway order was processed and ready within 30 minutes.

The Tacos al pastor, served in batches of three, were generously filled with pork that was seasoned with achiote and vinegar and shaven directly from the shawarma grill. The crowning pineapple element, which is roasted atop the meat, lends a sweetness that only enhances the overall flavour. The alambre chicken is a hearty portion of grilled peppers, melted cheese, and mushrooms served atop chicken. The dish comes with five hot tortillas, allowing you to create your own taco style.

The vegetarian volcanes were especially enjoyable. Crispy tortillas are layered with a mix of grilled peppers, mushrooms and melted cheese, resulting in a delightful crunch. Add a side of beans, refried with onion and chilli, and the smooth pico de gallo with its jalapeño kick, and you have a Mexican feast fit for kings.
