“Renaming Government Organisations”

Dear Readers,

For those keen on understanding the bedrock of Ireland’s financial sphere, I would recommend Chris Horn’s editorial “Redefining SFI brand could adversely affect economy” in the Business section (Opinion, March 7th). He astutely lays out a groundbreaking move in Irish economic policy of the past two decades that seems to be overlooked.

The formation of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) along with its strategic alliance with IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland has set up a lucrative international value proposition that has become the object of envy for rival investment destinations. Despite attempts, this harmonious collaboration has proven unmatchable by others. Manufacturing brand prominence is no easy task and it is worth several times the expenditure involved in its creation.

In light of the recent trend of renaming state agencies using Irish terminologies, I believe there are good intentions behind it. Nonetheless, given the substantial taxpayers’ funds invested in establishing the SFI brand, does it make sense to renounce it for “Taighde”, which is largely incomprehensible and difficult to pronounce for its intended audience? It will soon be known as “Taigdhe, formerly known as SFI”, akin to “X, formerly known as Twitter.” The trinity, IDA/EI/SFI, has garnered international recognition, and replacing “SFI” with “Taidghe” would prove to be a hindrance.

These successful agencies, boasting significant brand reputations, are naturally allied. They should continue to be held accountable to the government, which in return, has the duty to safeguard the investments previously made in developing these coveted worldwide brands.

With warm regards,
PATRICK HOWLIN,
