Remembering building surveyor Noel Larkin, who is acknowledged for being a gentleman, and for his generous contribution of time and expertise

Noel Larkin, a highly respected member of the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) and frequent contributor to The Irish Times/SCSI Property Clinic column, has sadly passed away at the age of 58. Since 1988, Noel had been involved in building surveying and had established and managed his own firm, Noel Larkin & Associates, located in Dunshaughlin, Co Meath.

In a LinkedIn message shared on Tuesday, the SCSI paid tribute to Larkin’s active participation within the Society, including his willingness to devote his time and expertise to fellow members. In 2023, Larkin’s exceptional contributions earned him the president’s award from the SCSI.

Originally hailing from Cavan, Larkin had a previous tenure as chairman of the Building Surveyor Professional Group and had been a part of the registration body’s admission board. The SCSI commended Larkin’s dedication to advancing the field of surveying and his efforts to mentor the upcoming generation.

Larkin was also a regular contributor to SCSI’s Surveyor’s Journal and the Property Clinic, where he offered solutions to readers’ issues such as managing home renovations and dealing with disruptive students in residential areas.

The SCSI fondly reflected on Larkin as a true gentleman, who always had a smile on his face and kind words to offer. His extensive contributions will be greatly missed in the community. SCSI president Enda McGuane spoke of Larkin’s immense contributions to the profession, mentioning his widespread involvement, including education, training, advocacy, regulatory work and public service.

The SCSI expressed their condolences to his wife Barbara, his children Jane, Joe, and Hilary, his wider family, and his numerous friends. They concluded their message with an Irish blessing ‘Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.’
