“Reliable French wines from the supermarket: two classics at £10 each”

Marks & Spencer presents an intriguing assortment of wines, boasting an array of uncommon grape types and regions. While the cost could be slightly pricier compared to other grocery stores, the quality generally surpasses its competitors.

Though for the moment, our spotlight falls on two renowned regions for French wines. In the North West of France, we find Muscadet, encapsulated by the city of Nantes. The wines from this region are typically light and invigorating, making them ideal as an appetiser or coupled with salads or shellfish, a local delicacy.

Bordeaux is a name that resonates with nearly every wine aficionado. Located near the southeastern coast of France, it’s renowned for wines that are traditionally medium-bodied. However, as the globe warms, Bordeaux is heating up, resulting in wines with higher alcohol content.

Our selection includes the M&S Muscadet 2023 – boasting 12% abv and prised at €11. Characterised by a light and invigorating taste, featuring tones of zesty lemon and green apple, it leaves a dry and pleasant aftertaste. It can be enjoyed solo as a pre-dinner treat, with shellfish or summer salads, or why not savour it as the locals do; with half a dozen of fresh, succulent oysters?

Next up is the M&S Classics No 34 Claret 2023 from Bordeaux – prised at €14 and 12% abv. This fresh, medium-bodied, unoaked Bordeaux comes with flavours of ripe plum and blackcurrant, leaving a dry finish. It’s supple and well-rounded with a hefty flavour intensity. We suggest pairing this with roast lamb or beef, lentils and red peppers, or robust cheeses.
