Reintroduce Conductors on Buses

Dear Editor, – Alice Leahy delineates several positive aspects of reinstating conductors on buses in her letter on October 9th. In addition, I presume this action would foster an increased feeling of safety for many travellers, especially during the twilight hours. The duties of drivers properly centre on navigation, while a conductor is eminently equipped to foster a convivial atmosphere of orderliness throughout the vehicle.

The resurgence of conductors would contribute to a decrease in traffic bottlenecks and hasten travel durations, which would be advantageous for all. As was customary previously, passengers could merely embark and select a seat, anticipating the conductor’s attendance once the bus resumes its route, instead of necessitating a halt while they scramble for change or attempt to use a mobile phone.

Technology is no substitution for the affable presence of our fellow man, and in numerous instances it can actually result in tardier, substandard service. Yours faithfully, CHRISTOPHER RUANE, Lanark, UK.
