An individual seeking international protection took a leap into Dublin’s River Liffey on Friday evening in an urgent bid to aid a woman drowning. The incident took place near Ha’penny Bridge at Bachelors Walk, where onlookers began to form a crowd. Three people – the woman, the protection applicant, and a Garda member who dove into the river to aid in the rescue – were escorted out of the water by the Dublin Fire Brigade.
Two of the rescuers – the woman who was in danger and one of the heroes – were subsequently taken to the hospital, but thankfully sustained no serious harm. The Fire Brigade, during this tumultuous event, dispatched its rescue boat along with two fire engines from their main station at Tara Street.
Alan Dillon, a representative of the Dublin Fire Brigade, recapitulated the details of the incident, stating a distress call led to the deployment of their resources. He commended the Garda and the international protection applicant for their quick-thinking actions, diving in to assist onto the predicament at hand. An update carried news of their recovery, thankfully excluding any serious injuries.
