“Referendums: Voters Uninformed About Government Warnings”

Dear Sir,

Drawing from your recent piece discussing the dire legal fallouts that could spring from the referendums (“Referendums poised to trigger ‘legal ambiguity’ on immigration regulations, cited in news prior to reassurances from O’Gorman”, News, June 6th), as well as prior insights revealed by the Revenue (“Tax modifications may be compelled by family referendum – a private early warning by Revenue officials”, News, May 21st), it’s abundantly clear that pressing enquiries need to be directed at the Irish Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman, and indeed the full governmental assembly.

Repeated instances of deception have been experienced by voters – kept shielded from truth by the governmental factions – notwithstanding the fact that the same parliamentarians had been warned in advance of the gargantuan complications that could ensue should the referendums have been ratified.

Endless noises about a trust deficit within the Government, the upswing in disinformation, far right ideologies, conspiracy theories, among others, are recurring complaints.

Is it totally surprising then, that voters start harbouring scepticism when our own Government makes a habit of duping us, and then proceeds unapologetically even upon being found out, offering no reasoning for their actions?

Political integrity appears to exist in name only.

Kind regards,

JULIA ANDERSON,
