Reports from the United States suggest that Louis Rees-Zammit, the erstwhile rugby standout from Wales, has inked a deal with Kansas City Chiefs, the triumphant Super Bowl team. Expected to strengthen the Chiefs’ practice team initially, Rees-Zammit won recognition during his stint on the international player pathway (IPP) of the NFL.
The 23-year-old sportsman is speculated to cover the roles of running back and wide receiver, with his contract’s official confirmation expected this Friday. This budding NFL franchise player had been on the radar of multiple teams like New York Jets, Denver Broncos, and Cleveland Browns, following a series of visits.
Up next, Rees-Zammit is determined to bag a spot on the Chiefs’ final team for the upcoming season, aligning with star players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce for a three-peat Super Bowl triumph. Previously known for his prowess as a wing for Gloucester, Lions and Wales, he made headlines in the rugby world after deciding to abandon the sport in January, with an ambition to clinch an NFL contract in 2024.
Rees-Zammit’s dream seems to be unfolding, especially after his commendable performance during the previous week’s pro day, which is a crucial step in the IPP. He registered 4.43 seconds in the 40-yard sprint, a 9ft 7in flat jump, and a 29-inch vertical jump.
Meanwhile, four athletes from Ireland are in the race for NFL contracts within the IPP initiative as kickers and punters. Charlie Smyth, a Down goalie, is on the roster to practice with New Orleans Saints this Thursday, per sources such as Pro Football Ireland and The Athletic.
Earlier this month, Smyth, along with Rory Beggan from Monaghan and Wicklow’s Mark Jackson, showcased their abilities at the NFL scouting combine and demonstrated their skills at a pro day held at the University of South Florida the past week.
