It is profoundly disturbing that the closure of the critical railway line between Ennis and Limerick in Clare, a vital part of our national infrastructure, is happening in the advent of our fresh holiday season. Pinning the responsibility from one agency to the next is an unacceptable response from the concerned authorities. This situation should be seen as a national dilemma. With the impending threat of climate change, the significance of a dependable railway service between Limerick and Ennis cannot be overstated.
The Ballycar flooding was no surprise; it’s the second prolonged disruption in a mere four years. Another interruption is simply intolerable, as it risks eroding faith in the service – a prospect we cannot entertain if we intend to ensure sustainability in Clare’s transportation system.
The current state of affairs at Ballycar is enough to compel the resurrection of Percy French and inspire a new humorous song. It is shameful that the fastest-growing railway system in the country is brought to disgrace, resembling the historic West Clare Railway, notorious for its turf-related issues. We cannot sit by and tolerate this failure lest Clare suffers from neglect. Yours faithfully,
