Jon Rahm, a known figure for his composure in high stress situations, confessed his apprehensions regarding his upcoming speech at the Champions Dinner next month. Rahm became a part of LIV Golf shortly after his victory at the 2023 Masters. Despite having a reputation for cool-headedness, he stated in a video call set up by Augusta National Golf Club that the prospect of addressing a group of prestigious champions is indeed intimidating.
It’s a tradition at the Masters for the reigning champion to give a speech at a private dinner for previous winners. The event is conducted inside the clubhouse of Augusta National during the week of the tournament. Rahm, who sealed the most significant win of his career at the 2023 Masters – where he overcame a two-shot gap in the final round – appreciates the importance of the upcoming occasion.
Rahm, not unfamiliar with public speaking, commented on his anxieties: “I typically don’t struggle with speaking publicly. However, I find it daunting to think about standing up to address such successful people.”
The two-times major winner revealed his menu for the dinner – a Spanish feast including ‘Mama Rahm’s Classic Lentil Stew’. Rahm is yet to decide on the subject of his speech, but said he plans to speak from his heart and not prepare too much. He playfully suggested that a glass or two of wine could help him relax.
At the Masters, Rahm is aiming to join the elite group of players who have successfully defended their titles, a feat last achieved by Tiger Woods in 2001-2002. Having finished in the top-10 in all four of his LIV Golf starts this year, Rahm is confident about his form and is eagerly waiting to compete alongside the world’s best golfers.
Commenting on his recent good form and enthusiasm for the Masters, Rahm said, “It’s been great so far. I’ve played some good golf. I’m definitely eager to compete with the world’s best golfers at the Masters.” He plans to reacquaint himself with the Augusta National next week, ahead of the tournament.
Rahm’s choice to become part of LIV Golf led to him foregoing the chance to defend his title at three events on the PGA Tour this year – The Sentry Tournament of Champions, American Express, and Genesis Invitational.
“Truthfully, it’s been a mixed bag for me. While it’s been smooth sailing on some aspects, giving up on defending titles that are significant to me was no easy feat,” Rahm admitted.
“The decision has been long made, I’ve moved on and I feel at peace with it. However, I do yearn to return and perhaps even defend my Masters title in the following month. Achieving that would be an absolute dream come true.”
