Procedure for Clouded Lens Removal

Dear Reader,

I would like to address a recent perspective on cataract surgery dubbed as “one of the easiest” by Fintan O’Toole. As a seasoned ophthalmologist who underwent several years of mastering this craft, I was quite taken aback by this assertion. Despite the patient feeling minimal discomfort during this swift process, I would like to point out that it requires many hours of experience and preparation, contradicting the label of being a ‘simple’ procedure.

Our health service’s elongated waiting lists for this type of surgery are primarily due to improper management and lack of sufficient resources. One of the few sectors in healthcare where needs align directly to population statistics, it is feasible to foretell and devise a systematic plan. It’s not as straightforward as it’s made to seem.

Yours Sincerely,
Cian Ó Coileáin,
Specialist in Ophthalmology.
