Following the passing of renowned businessman Tony O’Reilly on Saturday, tributes have flooded in under the leadership of President Michael D Higgins. In his official statement, President Higgins lauded Mr O’Reilly for his creative impact on diverse areas of Irish life, praising his captivating personality.
Mr O’Reilly was at the helm of US-based food enterprise Heinz, serving as the CEO and chairman. His substantial wealth was often invested in domestic ventures that comprised the Independent newspaper group and Waterford Glass. Additionally, he had a hand in initiating the Ireland Funds, an international network for philanthropy and fundraising.
President Higgins paid tribute to the broad range of Irish sectors positively influenced by Mr O’Reilly’s innovative approach. He mentioned the discernible use of the Irish diaspora during Ireland’s challenges through the Ireland Funds, which had profound effects on a North/South basis. This was viewed as one of his key contributions.
The President also noted how Mr O’Reilly’s innovation spanned over various areas, including sport, application of science and technology, the complex nature of business, and the often-volatile sphere of newspaper ownership, both locally and internationally. He specially mentioned Mr O’Reilly’s personal dedication to the quintessentially Irish enterprise, Waterford Crystal.
President Higgins commended Mr O’Reilly’s significant philanthropy actions, and sent his condolences to the O’Reilly family on behalf of the nation. Tony O’Reilly has passed away at 88 in St. Vincent’s hospital, a fact confirmed by a family spokesperson on Saturday.
Lastly, Mr O’Reilly’s family issued a statement declaring their expectation of many meaningful tributes to be paid to Tony, in light of his unparalleled accomplishments in sport and entrepreneurship. Additionally, they highlighted his extraordinary altruistic foresight, particularly manifested through establishing the Ireland Funds during a bleak period in Ireland’s history.
“He was cherished to us as a beloved father and grandfather. We were privileged enough to be with him in his final moments, as his grand journey came to an end,” the family expressed.
The passing of Mr. O’Reilly has led to warm remembrances from all walks of politics, with the Prime Minister, Simon Harris, labelling him as “a titan within the realms of athletics, commerce, and journalism”.
Saied Mr Harris, “He was a trendsetter who set ambitious goals on the global business stage. His endeavours in the United Kingdom, the United States and Ireland laid a foundation that many fellow Irish business leaders went on to follow.”
Mr Harris added, “Today’s Ireland views itself as a central figure on the global stage – Tony O’Reilly was one of the first Irish entrepreneurs who truly perceived that.”
“His life was so multifaceted that it is difficult to spotlight one aspect; nonetheless, Tony O’Reilly’s creation of the Ireland Funds alongside the late Dan Rooney brought about a dramatic change in Ireland,” Mr Harris noted. “With his departure, a void will be left that will be felt by all those who came into contact with him throughout his life, particularly his children and grandchildren during these tough times.”
Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin, posting on X, commended O’Reilly as “an innovative soul whose extraordinary influence was felt in Irish business, media, sports, and society”. He stated he was “heartbroken” to hear about O’Reilly’s death.
“Tony O’Reilly altered the international understanding of peace and reconciliation in Ireland through the Ireland Funds. My condolences are extended to his offspring, family and companions,” said Mr Martin.
