President Honours Harrington’s Second Olympic Gold

President Michael D Higgins was at the forefront of those paying tribute to Kellie Harrington, an illustrious boxer from Portland Row, as she bagged her second Olympic gold on Tuesday. Harrington outperformed China’s Yang Wenlu at the Stade Roland Garros, Paris, in the lightweight (60kg), and turned out to be the first Irish female to defend an Olympic title successfully.

Higgins took to platform X to pay his compliments: “Heartiest congratulations to Kellie Harrington on achieving the significant feat of becoming a two-time Olympic gold medallist. Truly, an extraordinary accomplishment by an amazing sportsperson.”

Taoiseach Simon Harris also eulogised Harrington through a statement shortly after her stunning win. He stated, “Kellie Harrington, you have made our nation proud. It’s my immense pleasure to convey the pride and joy of the Irish government and people as Taoiseach. We not only appreciate you for your double win at the Olympics but also for the grace and dignity with which you represent our nation.

“You have been a source of inspiration for everyone, from the young to the old. This victory and the ensuing celebrations are well-deserved by you, your kin, your trainers, and your community. All of Ireland is revelling in your glory. You are legendary,” he further appended.

Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin equated Harrington’s display to an exemplary show of boxing prowess against a potent adversary. He posted on X, “Incredibly splendid Kellie Harrington, Consecutive Olympic champion! Once again, you have brought immense pride to all Irish citizens. Simply inspiring.”

The leader of Sinn Féin, Mary Lou McDonald, proclaimed Harrington as ‘Dublin’s North Inner City’s pride’ post her victory. McDonald posted on X, “She made it! Kellie Harrington creates history and has the entire country on its toes! Ireland’s national hero now holds two Olympic titles!”

Professional boxer and an Olympic bronze winner, Michael Conlan, wrote on X, “A fantastic woman indeed. Absolutely delighted for Kellie, she’s a true high-achieving athlete. Double Olympic champ, phenomenal indeed! D1’s best.”
