In Saturday’s premier league action, Tottenham Hotspur managed to pull off a 2-1 victory against Burnley, a crushing defeat that confirmed Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League. Despite an early goal from Jacob Bruun Larsen, Tottenham came back with Pedro Porro’s equaliser and a late goal from Micky van de Ven. This left Burnley, managed by Vincent Kompany, languishing five points from safety with one game left, effectively sealing their relegation fate.
In other premier league fixtures, West Ham recorded a 3-1 win over Luton Town at London Stadium. The remarkable comeback after a slow first half gave retiring manager David Moyes a perfect final home game send-off. Ward-Prowse equalised in the 54th minute for West Ham, and further goals coming from Tomas Soucek and substitute George Earthy. On 26 points and in 18th place, Luton needed to win to stay in the race for staying in the Premier League, but this defeat signifies the end of Luton’s hopes of avoiding relegation. Their fate could be sealed depending on the outcome of the Nottingham Forest versus Chelsea game.
Despite being already relegated, Sheffield United suffered another loss against Everton with Abdoulaye Doucoure scoring the only goal. However, this result set a new record for Everton while delivering an unwanted one to Sheffield United.
Doucoure’s goal by a header marked the 101st goal conceded by United this season, breaking the previous record held by Swindon Town in the 1993-94 season, which spanned 42 games. Everton, ranked 15th and holding 40 points from 37 matches, have achieved their first string of five consecutive home victories in the Premier League without giving up any goals, a feat which has distanced them from the threat of demotion.
The match had a post-season ambiance, with neither team having any significant stakes. Nevertheless, Everton exhibited more promising game plays and rightfully claimed the victory. In the match between Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion, the teams settled on a 1-1 draw, thanks to Sean Longstaff’s levelling goal in the first-half’s extra time on Saturday in Newcastle’s last home game of a fluctuating Premier League season.
Newcastle, who are aiming for a Europa League or Conference League spot next season, are leading Chelsea and Manchester United by three points, ranking 6th with 57 points. However, both trailing teams have a game in hand over Eddie Howe’s squad. Brighton maintains a mid-table position with 48 points. Brighton’s Joel Veltman got ahead early in the game, scoring in the 18th minute and giving the visiting team a head start. Longstaff equalised for Newcastle right before halftime, but despite a lively second half, no more goals were scored.
In another Premier League match, Crystal Palace triumphed over Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1, thanks to goals from Michael Olise, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Eberechi Eze. This marked Palace’s fifth win in their last six games. They now sit 12th in the league standing, level on 46 points with Wolves, but a superior goal difference sees them one position above. The match saw Palace dominate from the start, and Olise opened the scoring in the 26th minute, driving the ball into the far bottom corner from roughly 20 yards away.
In a swift move two minutes on, Mateta netted a goal after the ball rebounded off the post from Nathaniel Clyne’s attempt. Post-half-time, Wolves improved their play and Matheus Cunha managed to score in the 66th minute after a skilful bout of passing within the penalty area. Eze, however, sealed victory for Palace after taking a pass from Olise, skirting past goalkeeper Dan Bentley, and brilliantly netting in an almost vacant goal.
In an exhilarating Premier League match on Saturday, Brentford triumphed over Bournemouth, with a scoreline of 2-1. The victory was due in large part to Yoane Wissa’s goal, netted four minutes into extra time following a series of late gaols. Brentford seized an early lead in the 86th minute, thanks to Wissa smoothly handling a long ball from goalkeeper Mark Flekken and setting up Bryan Mbeumo, who scored from the penalty area rim.
However, home team Bournemouth equalised moments later with Dominic Solanke’s goal, a beautiful header from Marcos Sensei’s cross. This was a redemption for Solanke, who had two goals disallowed in the first half. Wissa wasn’t done though – he quickly reestablished the lead for Brentford after blasting Mbeumo’s pass into the net. This win, bringing Brentford to the 16th spot in the league with 39 points from 37 matches, pushed Bournemouth down to 11th place, holding 48 points.
