Solvang, California Nestled in the Santa Ynez Valley, Solvang has drawn such inspiration from Denmark that Danish royalty have visited the city four times. Timber-framed houses, windmills and a replica of Copenhagen’s Rundetaarn all highlight the Danish element of the Californian city. Chimayó, New Mexico El Santuario de Chimayó was built by the Spanish in 1813 and its dirt floors are rumoured to have healing properties. The location was place of worship long before the construction with different civilizations using it as a sanctuary. It attracts around 300,000 visitors a year which is hardly surprising given the fact that it is seen as the most important Catholic pilgrimage centre in the USA. Ouray, Colorado The mountainous town has been dubbed the Switzerland of Colorado. New Orleans, Louisiana A mix of different cultures such as French, African and Creole has made it a hotspot for those wanting to soak up live music, a good nightlife and top quality cuisine. Lindsborg, Kansas The Svensk Hyllningsfest takes place twice a year as a tribute to the Swedish immigrants who settled there through dancing, art and food. St Augustine, Florida The distinctly European architecture remains in the city to this city giving it a very Spanish feel. Decorah, Iowa Norwegian settlers came to Decorah in the 1800s because the terrain around them reminded them of Norway. Lewiston, Maine Lewiston’s population is largely of Canadian or African descent and therefore it is not uncommon to hear French being spoken around the city. Roswell, New Mexico Famed for the supposed UFO crash in 1947, many shops and diners try to cash in on the event using alien themes to attract tourists looking for extra-terrestrials. Framingham, Massachusetts Large-scale Brazilian immigration has turned the city into a haven for foodies. Bahia Honda key, Florida With beaches and clear water you can certainly understand comparisons with the Carribean. Fredericksburg, Texas Founded by 120 German immigrants in 1846, it retained German as its language up until World War Two. The essence of Germany still remains though with German architecture and cuisine abundant.
