In a contentious Hungarian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri emerged victorious after a fuming Lando Norris had to surrender his potential second Formula One win due to a directive from his McLaren team. A less than stellar start from the pole at the Hungaroring saw Norris fall behind Piastri, his teammate.
A perceived reprieve came for Norris when he was brought in for a second tyre change two laps before Piastri by McLaren. Subsequently, Norris managed to take the lead and established a five-second edge over Piastri. Nonetheless, urging from his race engineer, Will Joseph, forced the Briton to relinquish his leading position to Piastri, despite Norris chasing Max Verstappen for the world championship.
With three laps left, Norris intentionally slowed down on the primary straight, allowing Piastri to overtake him. “You don’t need to say anything,” Norris responded over the radio in frustration. Norris finished one spot better than Lewis Hamilton, followed by Charles Leclerc in fourth and Max Verstappen in fifth.
In the race’s final stages, there was a collision between Hamilton and Verstappen as they vied for the third spot, prompting Mercedes to accuse Verstappen of “arriving out of control” on the 63rd lap of the 70-lap race. More details to come.
