Netflix has confirmed that an upcoming movie adaptation of the hit TV series “Peaky Blinders” is in the works. Irish actor and Oscar winner Cillian Murphy will return to his role as notable gangster Tommy Shelby in this new project, which will be a continuation of the six-season long BBC series from 2013 to 2022. The script of the movie, appropriately named “A Peaky Blinders Film”, has been shared by Netflix and it’s been disclosed that Tom Harper will handle directorial duties.
Cillian Murphy expressed his interest in taking up the role of Tommy once more, hinting that he still has unfinished business with the character. Murphy will also contribute to the production of the film. The new project sparks joy for Murphy as it means collaborating again with Steven Knight and Tom Harper, the original creators of “Peaky Blinders”.
“Peaky Blinders” took viewers on a journey through post-war Birmingham, following the ascent of the Shelby family to notoriety. The forthcoming film will pick up from where the series concluded, venturing into the happenings of the second World War. Murphy’s depiction of his character, a Shelby family member, earned him substantial fan acclaim. Additionally, his leading role in the film “Oppenheimer” saw him bag multiple accolades including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a Bafta and a Screen Actors Guild award.
Coined an “explosive chapter” by the show’s creator, Steven Knight, the movie promises to maintain the same intensity that was characteristic of the original series. Filming is set to commence in Birmingham in September. Netflix has been announced as the platform that will host the film. Knight sees the film as an exciting full-fledged “Peaky Blinders” narrative delving into the intensity of war.
Tom Harper, who directed several episodes of the series’ maiden season back in 2013, is equally thrilled to comeback and steer the film. He reminisced about the early stages of “Peaky Blinders” and the realisation that they had created something genuinely powerful. Harper believes that the basic essence of the show has always been about family, and this movie aims to uphold that while reaching global viewers via Netflix.
