“Operation Transformation Ends After 17 Seasons”

After 17 seasons, the health and weight loss focused RTÉ show, Operation Transformation, is wrapping up. The announcement was made by the broadcaster on a recent Friday, having notified all participants, including the show’s experts and stakeholders, several weeks prior. RTÉ, every year, conducts an editorial review at the close of each series to ensure quality programming that best serves the audience.

The show was initiated back in 2008 with Gerry Ryan presenting and selecting potential participants on his RTÉ 2FM radio show to track their weight loss journey. Kathryn Thomas took over the presentation of the show in 2012 and is proud of the legacy they leave behind.

However, in recent years, Operation Transformation has confronted objections, with an online plea to shut down the programme amassing 10,000 signatures. Critics argue that the show establishes a norm for disordered eating patterns and continues to attach stigma to weight.

Grainne McAleer, RTÉ’s commissioning editor, expressed her gratitude towards all the leaders who participated in the series over its 17-season run and praised the audience’s meaningful engagement. Though the show may be concluding, McAleer affirmed that there are plans underway to renew and innovate their upcoming programming.

Kathryn Thomas shared her immense privilege and learning experience being part of Operation Transformation for over 14 years. With a new series slated to debut next January, RTÉ will be announcing more details later in the year.
