Peter O’Mahony, the former captain of Munster, has re-signed with the team for an additional year. This news follows the completion of Ireland’s latest Six Nations bout against Scotland, during which O’Mahony questioned the longevity of his career with his IRFU central contract coming to an end this season. It was confirmed on Friday by Munster that they had negotiated a deal with O’Mahony that will keep him within the province, with the IRFU partially covering his wages.
The start of the year saw uncertainty surrounding O’Mahony’s continuity at Munster, as no contract had been offered to him. However, during the Six Nations, both O’Mahony and Conor Murray were approached with contract propositions, as Murray’s Ireland central contract was also nearing its end.
Since joining the Munster academy in 2008 and making his entry into the squad in 2010, O’Mahony, now 34, has remained a prominent figure in the team. His international debut came in 2012 for Ireland, and since then he has made 182 appearances for Munster, been capped 105 times for Ireland and also played four times for the British & Irish Lions.
His prolific career has seen him win a total of five Six Nations titles and two league championships with Munster so far.
