In Athletics, Ian O’Riordan gives his views on the chances of Rhasidat Adeleke, Sophie Becker and Sharlene Mawdsley in the 400m heats today. O’Riordan is particularly excited about Adeleke, a 21-year-old sprinter hailing from Dublin, who is competing in her first ever Olympics.

Here’s some trivia to start your day. Following a successful weekend where Rhys McClenaghan took home a gold medal and Daniel Wiffen bagged a bronze medal, Ireland’s tally at the Games surpassed the previous record of six medals won in London 2012, hitting seven. It’s a remarkable improvement from Athens 2004, where Ireland failed to win a single medal.

Unfortunately, while there are nine Irish athletes taking part today, none of them will be able to add to the medal tally, as they are all participating in early stage events and medals won’t be awarded.

Let us guide you through what’s coming up for the nine notable players, including a renowned athlete: Rhasidat Adeleke. Together with Sharlene Mawdsley and Sophie Becker, she will be participating in the 400m heats starting at 10.55am.

Today’s schedule is packed with numerous other anticipated events such as the women’s 5,000m (8.15pm) and 800m (8.47pm) finals, as well as the men’s pole vault with Mondo Duplantis beginning at 6pm. We might also witness the last Olympic performance from Simone Biles in the beam at 11.36am and the floor final at 1.20pm. Can’t miss events also include the kayak cross finals for both men (4pm) and women (3.55pm), an event that has garnered significant attention for its bold and exciting nature.
