Whilst discussing the conceivable repercussions of the recently introduced Dublin city centre transportation strategy (Opinion & Analysis, July 13th), Mark O’Connell humorously suggested that motorists “paying for their flat whites through a vehicle’s window tap payment system” will be a common sight, given the ban on car stoppages within the city centre.
I believe he might be onto something indeed.
Just a day prior, on July 12th, my other half and I were halted at a red light signal on the west end of Galway’s Quincentenary Bridge. Here, we witnessed four ice-cream cones being handed over from an ice-cream van upfront to the inhabitants of an adjacent campervan. No exchange of physical cash was visible, leading us to surmise that the transaction was conducted via a “tap payment” medium.
As soon as the light signal turned green, each vehicle resumed movement and I was unexpectedly left yearning for an iconic 99. Yours Sincerely,
