Ní Riain’s Second Gold at Championships

Róisín Ní Riain, from Ireland, secured her second gold at the European Para Swimming Championships held in Madeira on Wednesday evening. The S13 100m backstroke final was won by American Paralympic victor Gia Pergolini who set a time of 1:05:75, however Ní Riain was the first European to finish, recording a time of 1:06:96 and hence earning the gold.

This is the second gold and third overall medal for the 18-year-old from Limerick, with three more events still on the cards. Ní Riain had earlier earned a silver in the 100m butterfly competition on the inaugural day, then clinched gold in the 100m breaststroke on the second day.

The Limerick swimmer is slated to compete again on Thursday morning in the 400m freestyle heat, in an attempt to make it to another final. Irish duo Nicole Turner and Dearbhaile Brady are also slated for the 50m freestyle final later in the day.
