Municipal Poll Results: Outcome for Dublin’s City Council

The upcoming elections for Dublin City Council have attracted 172 contestants scattered across 11 voting regions, competing for 63 council spots. In 2019, the Fianna Fáil party emerged as the key player, securing 11 seats. They have since maintained supremacy over the nation’s most significant local authority, alongside the Green Party, Labour, and Social Democrats. Sinn Féin, striving to recover from a significant loss, is fielding 30 candidates, after their total seat count dropped to eight in the last election. Fianna Fáil is putting forward 19 candidates, while Fine Gael has 16.

The Green Party witnessed significant traction in the previous elections with the ‘green wave,’ resulting in them seizing 10 seats in 2019. However, climate change doesn’t seem to be a top issue currently, based on interactions with candidates in the past few weeks.

Previously, the trending issue on the campaign trail was housing, but recently, immigration seems to have overtaken every other concern. The handling of tent settlements in the Pembroke region, particularly around the International Protection Office and the Grand Canal, has disappointed residents.

Besides this, local individuals have listed issues like public services scarcity, disruptive behaviour, the BusConnects proposal, litter problems, and road and footpath maintenance. Post office relocation in Rathmines and poor flood defences in Clontarf, especially after a year marked by harsh weather, have also come under scrutiny.

Here are the seats up for grabs in each area:

6- Artane-Whitehall
5- Ballyfermot-Drimnagh
6- Ballymun-Finglas
7- Cabra-Glasnevin
6- Clontarf
5- Donaghmede
6- Kimmage-Rathmines
7- North Inner City
5- Pembroke
5- South East Inner City
