The memorial service for a young football enthusiast and prospective traveller to South Africa, who tragically lost his life in a collision between an escooter and a bus, occurred in Waterford. Avu Idris, 17, had just achieved his Leaving Cert and was in the fatal accident with his 15-year-old companion, Gilbert Collins. Those attending the service at the Maranatha Christian Community Church in Poleberry learned of Avu’s exemplary role and leadership traits.
His mother, Priscilla, expressed gratitude to God for the 17 years she has spent with Avu. Her heartfelt words revealed the extent of her sorrow, calling it the most devastating day of her life. Avu’s profound love for football, she explained, was not merely a hobby, but an integral part of his existence. His fervour for his team to be victorious was palpable.
Priscilla now carries the memory of his laughter, his humour, and the debates they had. Their disputes often revolved around his laundry duties and his consistent tardiness for the bus, which she now oddly misses. His older sister, Noora, held onto the uplifting and motivating words her little brother often bestowed upon her.
Accompanied by an honour guard from the Villa Football Club and De La Salle Community College, Avu’s coffin was escorted to Kilbarry Cemetery. As the youth of Maranatha sang behind the hearse, attendees wiped tears from their faces. The service for his accomplice in the accident, Gilbert Collins, had been held the previous Tuesday.
