The head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the Moderna vaccine would be authorized quickly. In this way, the company can start shipping doses. It comes days after the USA began its largest-ever immunisation campaign with the rollout of the Pfizer/BioNTech jab.
There was 20-0 vote in a panel of FDA adviser to managed the benefits of the vaccine for those 18 years old and up. Once FDA’s emergency use authorisation is granted, Moderna will begin sending millions of doses. The first jabs are earmarked for health workers and nursing home residents.
The efficiency of Moderna vaccine
Moderna’s shot showed similarly great effectiveness to the Pfizer one, providing 94% security against Covid-19. Doctor Hayley Gans of Stanford University Medical Centre said: “The evidence that has been studied in great detail on this vaccine highly outweighs any of the issues we’ve seen.”
Moderna’s vaccine uses the same groundbreaking technology as Pfizer-BioNTech’s shot. Most traditional vaccines use a dead or weakened virus, but both of the new vaccines use snippets of Covid-19’s genetic code to train the immune system to detect and fight the virus.
Both require two doses but the Moderna’s is four weeks apart. The USA lead the world in virus total cases, with more than 1.6 million confirmed cases and more than 310,000 reported deaths.
