“Mickey Harte: ‘Empty Vessels Make Noise'”

Mickey Harte believes that his Derry squad has admirably handled the recent spate of rumours and criticism, dealing with it in the most effective way – by successfully clinching a win against Westmeath at Páirc Esler on Saturday evening.

Following Derry’s defeat to Armagh the previous Tuesday, tales regarding Harte’s managerial future and speculated issues within the team began to circulate wildly on social media. This was intensified by the team’s three back-to-back losses.

“There are too many individuals who consider their say as the absolute truth,” articulated Harte, while observing his team narrowly triumph over Westmeath.

“The loudest noise often comes from empty vessels, and that probably contributes to the situation. As a team, we realise this may actually spur the players on a bit,” he added, satisfied to demonstrate the importance of perseverance and resilience despite the spread of rumors.

Despite appreciating his team’s resilience, Harte expressed discontent with the fact that his team has been burdened with these controversies. He empathically stated, “It is unfair to the players, they certainly don’t deserve it. They’ve played their hearts out all year, delivering some fantastic gameplay. I just don’t appreciate this happening to them.”

“With regard to the surrounding commotion, I am unaffected by it. It’s not a pleasant situation, but it doesn’t trouble me. Those aiming it at me should realise that they won’t find any satisfaction, because I’m not concerned,” he admitted.

Harte doesn’t believe in such negative drives. He clarified that their primary source of motivation was their loyal Derry fans who supported the team in all conditions, taking the losses in stride along with the wins.

“They were playing for them [the supporters], they were the inspiration behind what the team achieved. The players have been unfairly criticised about the lack of certain qualities, with the best response being to soldier on and produce a result,” Harte added, before admitting, “One successful game doesn’t change the narrative, we are aware that similar queries will likely come up next week.”

Dessie Dolan, the man at the helm of Westmeath, has come out in support of Harte and feels that the recent backlash aimed at the Derry manager is unjustified. Dolan expresses surprise at how Harte has been able to endure the severity of the criticism, believing it to be unduly harsh. According to Dolan, Harte’s longstanding excellent track record as a manager is beyond question and his personal circumstances only further illustrate his extraordinary character. Dolan was filled with sympathy for Harte during this difficult week.
