A search operation is ongoing for prominent British television figure, Dr Michael Mosley, who was reported missing on the Greek isle of Symi. The endeavour has been shifted into a precarious mountainous region. Responders have been engaged in an intensive hunt for the 67-year-old TV celebrity, who was last seen on Wednesday during a stroll towards the island’s hub.
Recent CCTV footage discloses Dr Mosley in the vicinity of the marina in Pedi Village carrying an umbrella, apparently undisturbed. Earlier video recorded from a dwelling on Pedi’s marina fringe depicted him ambling in the direction of a hilly track around 2pm Wednesday local time.
According to his wife, Dr Bailey Mosley, these past three days without her spouse have been exceedingly tough on her and her children. Dr Mosley’s four offspring have united with their mother on Symi to aid the search.
In her address, Dr Bailey said they wait in agony while the efforts to locate Michael continue. Nevertheless, she expressed immense gratitude towards the residents of Symi, Greek officials, and the British Consulate who are relentlessly seeking Michael. They are holding onto hope.
Extending his commitments ahead, Symi’s Mayor, Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas, promised to prolong the comprehensive search endeavour integrating officers, drones, and divers. This is despite the precarious circumstances and sweltering heat, until Mosley is located.
The location, believed to be Dr Mosley’s last known whereabouts, is dominated by rocky terrain and teems with snakes, making it challenging. The mayor further expressed his concerns about the survival chances under the scorching heat, which soared over 40 degrees the day Dr Mosley vanished.
The missing TV personality’s search has been depicted by one of the rescue workers as a ‘battle against time’ as of last Friday.
“Expressing hope for Mosley’s safe discovery, Mr. Papakaloudoukas indicated that the entire local community was dismayed, describing the incident as unprecedented in their history. Mosley’s spouse, together with several British acquaintances, is actively scouring the island for him, according to Papakaloudoukas.
At the stroke of dawn, the fire department embarked on search operations within a 6.5km radius spanning hilly terrain encircled by the sea, reports Manolis Tsimpoukas, who is in charge of managing missing persons’ search in the Dodecanese Islands. On being questioned about any leads on the missing Briton, Tsimpoukas responded with a definitive “no” adding that the region was perilous.
An on-site team from the island, despite harsh weather conditions, has been relentlessly pursuing the search mission. Single-handed efforts of firemen included exploring vast rocky terrains independently, and also deploying drones for the search. One of them reported that due to the dangerous nature of the task in the summer, only a limited 10-member team was conducting multi-peak searches.
Another firefighter, Stergos Giakoumakis, when contacted in the vicinity of one of these peaks, mentioned the difficulty of managing a large team under such risky circumstances.
According to him, the same team was alternating shifts and taking brief break times in between. Due to the lack of shade or trails near the summit that separates Pedi Bay from Agia Marina, where Mosley is suspected to have travelled, the firemen had to resort to using umbrellas for protection from the sun. The hillside is full of rocks, from which wilted grass sticks out, and scanty greenery survives amidst the landscape.
On the same note, Mika Papakalodouka, daughter of the mayor, reported on Friday that many locals had participatively expanded the search, employing private boats to find the missing British national. She described how the islanders were proactively involved in the search given their friendly nature and the peculiarity of Mosley’s disappearance on such a diminutive island.”
According to regional reports, Mosley, who has gained notoriety for promoting the 5:2 diet and for his regular features on BBC’s The One Show as well as ITV’s This Morning, was spotted at the Pedi region on Wednesday. This news was shared by a local Facebook community, which revealed that Mosley had taken a stroll along St Nicholas Beach around 1:30pm in Greece local time on the said day.
