The High Court has rescheduled a date in November for Conor McGregor, the Mixed Martial Arts athlete, to face a damages lawsuit. A woman, reportedly acquainted with Mr McGregor, has launched a personal injury case against him. Initially slotted for late June or early July, the case will now be heard by a High Court judge and jury.
Lawyers representing Mr McGregor, who refutes all allegations made against him, requested the rescheduling to November as he is slated to fight Michael Chandler at the UFC on June 29th in Las Vegas. Remy Farrell SC, Mr McGregor’s barrister, argued that the trial would be impractical around the fighting schedule, especially if his client were to get injured during the bout.
The plaintiff objected to the postponement. Her representative, John Gordan SC, expressed disappointment over the further delay due to the commitment of Mr McGregor to a boxing match. He argued that the trial could ideally start on July 2nd, providing ample time for Mr McGregor to return to Ireland from his United States boxing match.
However, due to prior commitments, Mr Justice Alexander Owens, who is acquainted with Mr McGregor and the public interest in the case, has rescheduled the hearing to November. This new date, according to the judge, is advantageous for the plaintiff as it assures that the trial will happen on that day. The hearing is expected to span two weeks.
The court was informed that consensus might be reached on pretrial motions raised by the defendant without the need for the judge’s intervention. Mr McGregor was actively trying to access supporting evidence to refute the charges against him, involving several parties inclusive of An Garda Siochana. Mr Farrell added that mutual agreement had been found regarding this evidence, thus the court wasn’t required to review the contentious issues.
There were two litigation cases initiated against Mr McGregor, a popular sportsman, regarding events reportedly occurred in 2018. The claimant, a woman, has sued both Mr McGregor and a person linked with him. The legal actions were placed in the High Court more than three years prior, yet no particulars of the woman’s lawsuit have been publicly discussed within the court.
A second personal injury lawsuit against Mr McGregor was launched by the woman’s mother, a case not scheduled for jury trial. Complete denial was expressed in response to all allegations within these legal proceedings. Both complainant women have secured representation by David Coleman from Coleman Legal Partners, while Michael J Staines & Company stand as council for the MMA sportsman Mr McGregor.
