McDowell Suspended for Anti-Doping Violation

Graeme McDowell, the former US Open champion, has been sanctioned for breaching the anti-doping policy of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf circuit. McDowell will miss one tournament as a result of his suspension, the consequence of using a decongestant containing the prohibited substance R-methamphetamine (levo-methamphetamine). The golf veteran has also been imposed a fine of $125,000 US dollars (€114,000). Results from the LIV Golf Nashville, for both McDowell and his team, have been annulled. The golf professional from Northern Ireland will not participate in this week’s tournament in West Virginia, with a prospective return in Chicago next month.

McDowell made a statement on social media, revealing that severe congestion led him to use an over-the-counter Vicks nasal decongestant unknowingly containing a forbidden substance. He accepts the necessity of stringent medication checks and the possibility of applying for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) in professional golf. He expressed remorse for this omission and accepts LIV’s penalties.

McDowell added that LIV’s Anti-Doping Policy, known for its comprehensiveness and transparency, posed a distinct challenge for him due to its strict enforcement. Despite this setback, the golfer supports the regulations and penalties, recognising their importance in upholding the sport’s integrity.

With a 22-year career under his belt, McDowell stands by his conduct and now plans to focus on his future in golf. His immediate goal is to get back on the golf course and he anticipates rejoining the circuit in Chicago.

At this week’s Smash GC tournament, a reserve player will step in for McDowell, yet to be named.
