During the 2024 European Cup, French footballer Kylian Mbappé, a recent acquisition by Real Madrid, will have to compete using a protective facial mask due to his fractured nose. The date of his return, however, is yet to be confirmed. His injury came about after a clash with Kevin Danso, the opposition team member, during their triumphant match against Austria.
Mbappé, following the incident, was taken to a Düsseldorf hospital for medical attention, though he was not in need of surgery. Despite his injury, he’s rejoined his teammates and is undergoing treatment. With his availability for the upcoming game against the Netherlands uncertain, the French Football Federation publicly informed that Mbappé had a nose fracture in the latter part of their match with Austria.
Firstly, he was treated by the team’s medical staff and its doctor Franck Le Gall, who discovered the nasal fracture, which was later confirmed after medical imaging investigations at the hospital. Presently, Mbappé is back at the French team quarters and is set for treatment soon, surgical intervention is not being considered at this point. A protective mask is being prepared for him to enable him to resume playing after his period of treatment.
Didier Deschamps, the French coach, during a press conference after the match, described Mbappé’s injury as a significant loss. His nose appears to have been severely damaged, with further checks necessary since the injury appears rather complex.
Danso offered his apologies to the French football fans, hoping for Mbappé’s speedy recovery. He regrets that his engagement with Mbappé led to the latter’s injury, especially as his back was toward him when Mbappé’s face struck his shoulder.
Despite his condition, the 25-year-old star of France, is demonstrating determination, even encouraging his social media followers to suggest ideas for the mask design, which has already generated countless online jokes and memes.
