Maureen Dowd’s examination: Melania Trump’s tribulations

Positioned outside my workspace, there lies a photograph capturing the Slovenian Sphinx touring the Egyptian Sphinx, taken during a Giza-based photo shoot in 2018. This was documented following nine months after the public revelation relating to Melania Trump’s husband and Stormy Daniels, which completely took Melania by surprise.

The picture alludes to a puzzling question pertaining to Melania: to what extent is she willing to endure the actions of a spouse who has treated her to unthinkable levels of betrayal and humiliation?

As we usher in the commencement of Donald Trump’s silence-payment prosecution, the reality of his character will be brought to harsh light, reminding us all of his selfish side. Analogous to Hillary Clinton, Melania too will be expected to display her pride while staunchly supporting her unfaithful spouse. Melania will prioritise her political ambitions and personal aspirations over her feelings of resentment – with her intention, it seems, to keep Donald out of financial ruin and prison.

Melania’s White House press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, reveals in her memoir that Melania adamantly wished to avoid any comparisons with Hillary Clinton. When news about her husband’s infidelities became public knowledge, Melania expressed her desire to independently travel to Air Force One ahead of Trump.

Grisham recalls Melania asserting, “I don’t wish to emulate Hillary Clinton, comprehend what I’m conveying?” She further recalled that Melania spoke of Hillary accompanying her husband, hand-in-hand, aboard Marine One after the Monica Lewinsky scandal came to light, and didn’t find it appealing.

Despite everything, Hillary Clinton managed to leverage the indiscretions of her husband as a stepping stone towards a Senate position, altering her image to portray a more empathetic persona.

The trial may solidify Melania’s identity as a Trump – a staunch supporter and inhabitant of Trump’s world, who believes the system is unfairly manipulating the odds against her spouse. Regardless of his misled actions, she is ready to stand by Donald as he attempts to reclaim his position in the Oval Office.

As articulated by Katie Rogers in the New York Times, Melania concurs with Donald’s stance that the trial process is unjust and that the prosecution’s actions are dishonourable, akin to meddling with the election process.

Stephanie Grisham had originally anticipated that Melania would react furiously when the Stormy Daniels scandal hit the headlines.

Melania, the enigmatic ex-first lady, further distanced herself, spending her days tucked away in her Mar-a-Lago suite or the spa — a plush form of self-imposed isolation. Rarely seen in her East Wing office to begin with, her presence was curiously absent from dinners with her husband on the patio. She conspicuously avoided using the word ‘wife’ and instead made veiled references to her husband on social media. She even went so far as to cancel plans to go with Donald to Davos, Switzerland, and instead chose to travel independently to his first State of the Union address.

One can only imagine how Melania must have clenched her flawless teeth as she endured Stormy’s detailed accounts of her past with Donald in In Touch magazine and a hard-to-swallow 60 Minutes interview. This included her tour dubbed “Make America Horny Again,” where she was willing to detail Donald’s anatomy, and a clip from a TV interview where she brushed aside questions about Melania.

Thus far, Melania has distanced herself from the messy situation, notably refusing to go to court in support of her husband — much like Ivanka Trump. According to Melania, she believes Stormy is a problem that Donald created for himself, and therefore, he should be the one to resolve it.

Her anger is palpable. She resents that she has been pulled into this adult-themed controversy, particularly during a period of personal mourning after her mother’s passing. It’s an ironic and rather absurd shoe to be in — where the man at the forefront of this messy issue is also promoting strict anti-abortion laws and the selling of Bibles while simultaneously faltering to allegations of hushing a porn star with a sizeable sum.

What stings further for Melania is the potentiality of having to testify, as suggested by Justice Juan Merchan. In addition to this, the jurors may be permitted to hear about Trump’s affair with Karen McDougal but not regarding its timeline during Melania’s pregnancy.

The previous First Lady, who is assisting her son in transitioning to college life, possibly at New York University, has urged not to bring Barron’s name into New York court proceedings. Trump unnecessarily involved Barron by requesting a day off due to his high school graduation.

Melania Trump, seemingly indicating her participation in the campaign, was the main attraction at a Log Cabin Republican gathering at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend. Trump, during a pre-discussion interview with Fox News Digital for the LGBT community, stressed the need for America to unite. This is not the first instance of Melania’s public messages being inconsistent with her husband’s actions.

As the First Lady, Melania appeared to adopt a style similar to Jackie Kennedy’s, pulling off high-end fashion which served not only as an artistic show but also as a protective shroud, maintaining grace amidst numerous humiliities.

“Dawn Tripp, the writer of the forthcoming novel Jackie, drew parallels between Melania and Jackie’s guarded, enigmatic demeanour, noting that while Jackie used this quality to uphold her autonomy from her husband’s government and exert her influence publicly and privately, Melania often appears to simply be endorsing Trump’s recklessness.

The satirical Saturday Night Live skit about Ivanka Trump coined the term “complicit”, which has become synonymous with the Trump women.
