Dear Sir, – Back in the late 1960s during my scholarly tenure in Co Donegal, I was fairly proficient in various subjects, except for, regrettably, mathematics.
The math tutor happened to be a young cleric, whose method of handling my persistent inability to respond accurately to queries was rather harsh. If I failed to provide the correct answer, he would stride over to me, then forcefully slap his hands over my ears.
The intense pressure consequently ruptured my eardrums, resulting in a perpetual agony that often disturbed my sleep, causing me to awaken disoriented due to the unrelenting pain in my ears.
Being a boarding student, I was stranded without any confidant or means of assistance. Truly, I was entirely subject to his whims and cruelties.
Such wounds, I have found, taking their toll on me never truly mend. – Sincerely yours,
ENDA SCANLON,
Co Clare.
